Scotiabank Vancouver Half-marathon & 5k veteran Delia Visscher completes her eighth challenge for the Alzheimer Society of B.C.!

The world of running and challenge events, like everything else, has experienced dramatic changes this year. Physical distancing protocols have seen running events from across the world postponed, cancelled or adapted to become virtual events.

One thing that has stayed the same, however, is the incredible spirit and determination of veteran 5k runner, Delia Visscher. Delia is a long-time Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon and 5k participant, and 2020 would have been her eighth challenge. She was resolved that this summer would be no different for her, and when the Society announced its fundraising event, Missed My Marathon, as an alternative virtual running event, she jumped on the opportunity to become our first-ever participant.

Delia first began taking part in the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon in 2013 as a way of challenging herself and raising funds for the Alzheimer Society of B.C., following her husband Jans’ transition into long-term care. She had initially connected with the Society for support and education when Jans was diagnosed with dementia. Since that first race and Jans’ passing, Delia has gone on to raise over $34,000 for the Society.

“Fundraising for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. has always had a special place in my heart, having gone through the long journey with my husband, Jans, until he died three years ago,” Delia explains. “In spite of the chaotic times in which we are living, and being almost 90 years old, I still won’t hesitate to ask friends to join me again for this worthy cause.”

The funds raised will help provide programs and services for the estimated 70,000 British Columbians living with dementia and their families. The support will also fund our advocacy efforts and research into the disease and people living with it.
