Enhancing Care Conference

The Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick's annual Enhancing Care Conference is an educational experience for Health Care Professionals that helps to provide the tools and specialized training that one needs when caring for persons with dementia. The conference is ideal for those providing care in the homes of those living with dementia, in Special Care Homes, Nursing Homes, and Acute Care.

This year we are excited to announce that our conference will be growing from a one day to a two day event. Both days will have plenary keynote speakers, a number of breakout sessions and workshops to choose from.

DAY ONE: Clinical and leadership focus
DAY TWO: Tailored to provide hands on tips and tools

Topics covered on the two days include person centred care planning, working within a multigenerational workforce, policy and ethical decision making, reducing stress and burnout, respecting individual choice, and improving the mealtime experience.  All presentations will focus on how to apply learnings using a person centred approach.

Jim Kinsey
Director of Member
Experience at Planetree

Jim has over 25 years in healthcare and has spent the last ten years consulting and educating long term care organizations for the implementation and sustainability of person-centred care. Jim is currently responsible for leading twenty-five Planetree member sites with their implementation of a patient and resident centered care culture.

Jim will be giving a plenary keynote titled “Avoiding the Next Institutionalization” and a workshop on
Palliative Dementia Care on Day One. He will also be giving a plenary keynote on Day Two titled “My Choice is Not a REFUSAL: Uncovering the absurdity in not seeing the person.”

Alan Manning
Executive Vice President

Alan Manning is the Executive Vice President at Planetree, Inc., a mission based non-profit dedicated to pioneering methods for personalizing, humanizing and demystifying the healthcare experience. Planetree currently partners with healthcare organizations across the continuum of care in 19 different countries.  Manning oversees many aspects of the day-to-day operations of the organization while also collaborating with sites in several countries.

He will be giving the plenary address on Day One on Multi-Generational Workforce and a breakout session on Day Two on Reducing Caregiver Burnout — two topics very timely in the heather care sector.

Rev. Faye Forbes
PWA Advocate, Speaker,
Advisory Member

Rev. Faye Forbes is a person living with dementia.  Since she was diagnosed 5 years ago, she has become an advocate for those living with this disease and is active with the Alzheimer Societies.  She was an advisory member for the Nova Scotia Dementia Strategy, Committee; member for the Dementia Friends Initiative; speaker at several conferences, including the G7 Global Action against Dementia; collaborated on an article for the Canadian Journal of Geriatric Medicine, and member of the Alzheimer Society of Canada Board of directors.

She will be giving the closing plenary keynote on Day One titled “Her Story Since the Diagnosis: A Patient’s Experience in Dementia Care.”

Brian LeBlanc
International Alzheimer’s
Advocate

In his career, Brian was a successful Public Relations and Marketing Director. Today, he utilizes those skills as an International Alzheimer's Advocate, having recently been appointed State of Florida Brand Ambassador and Policy and Advocacy Ambassador for the ALZ Association, he is working with State and Federal Representatives and Senators to influence policymakers to make Alzheimer's and Dementia-Related illnesses a priority. Brian shares his experience to challenge what people assume about those with dementia.  He challenges us to ask or learn what the person with dementia wants or needs instead of assuming you already know. To see the person, and NOT their disease or age, to connect with the person with dementia in a meaningful way, using a person-centred approach.

Brian will be giving a plenary keynote on Day Two about his experience living with dementia titled: “Living with Alzheimer’s—An Up Close and Personal Look at Life with Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Patrick Ledwell
Popular Host and
Comedian

Patrick Ledwell was born, raised, and now lives on Prince Edward Island. In April 2007, he was invited to perform at the Halifax Comedy Festival, one of Canada's premier comedy events. He has also appeared on CBC Radio’s comedy showcase “Hilarious and Homegrown” and on the national CBC Radio program "Madly Off in All Directions”. Ledwell is a headline performer in the “Island Standup Showcase”, a summer comedy event in Charlottetown, PEI. He has also written for the CBC Radio series "Lost and Found.”

Patrick will be delivering the end of day plenary keynote titled: “The Lighter Side of Mental Wellness in the Workplace” on Day Two. Patrick will bring a new approach to an important conversation.
