Artful Afternoon is a partnership program offered by the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. This program creates a space for people with dementia and their partner in care to connect with art. The program is offered virtually cross-province as well as in-person at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia for people living in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Both the virtual and in-person programs are dementia-friendly and focus on fun, creativity, and social interaction among participants! No prior experience in art is required to attend either version of the program.

The virtual version of the program offered on the Zoom platform involves a presentation of a selected artists’ work followed by group conversation/reflection about the artwork. Participants are also provided with curated art kits from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and basic art instruction is given during the session by a professional artist.

The in-person version at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia involves a guided gallery tour of selected art followed by an interactive and accessible guided art-making session led by the artist.

“It’s a fun activity to do with my parent. I think it's a good opportunity for him to get out and do something different, social, and enjoyable. It gives us something to talk about as well and creates good memories for us.” - Program Participant

Eligibility

The program is for care partners and people living with dementia to attend together. Both people are required to be present during each session. Generally, participants should have an interest in learning about art and experimenting with artmaking in a group setting.
