Meet Arlene Wright

Walk for Alzheimer's 2017 Hall of Fame

Arlene Wright’s two children are now 15 and 18 years old, but they’ve been part of the Walk for Alzheimer’s since they were tots.

“It turned out to be a family event they looked forward to every year,” said Arlene, who began walking in honour of her father in the early 2000s.

“In the beginning, we would take dad with us and he would sit and watch us participate, because I walk with my son and daughter and my mom. He passed away in 2008 but we kept participating after that,” she said.

The group was appropriately named “Grandpa Wright’s team.”

“Now my mom’s got dementia too, so it’s a double whammy,” Arlene said.

Her kids always loved the event, thanks to the fun atmosphere. And their mom was happy they were getting involved and learning about dementia. But as they got older, they began to understand more of the purpose behind the Walk for Alzheimer’s.

“They didn’t mind going at that stage, and then when they grew up and knew more about it, then they wanted to go for the cause rather than just the games and the cookies,” Arlene said.

Arlene Wright is a 56 year old resident of Woodstock who participates in the Ingersoll Walk for Alzheimer's.
