The experience of hospital discharge processes for persons living with dementia: Intergenerational family member perspectives

What is this Study about?

This study aims to understand family-provided care for persons living with dementia (PLWD), including ways the health care system interacts with this family care. One area of specific interest is family involvement in decisions for PLWD at the hospital or emergency department. Information about this experience is gathered through confidential individual interviews with family members. “Family” includes those who consider each other to be family, such as siblings, adult children, nieces/nephews, spouses, close friends. Information will be summarized for health authorities, publications, and presentations to groups interested in family-provided care for PLWD.

What Will Happen in This Study?

Participants will take part in individual interviews at a location of their choosing or online. If a family group wishes to be interviewed together, this can be accommodated. Participants will take part in one interview of approximately 60 minutes in length but may choose to be interviewed up to 3 times if they feel they need more time to describe their experiences.

Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?

You are eligible to participate if you are an adult family member of a person living with dementia who resides in Manitoba (family members may live in other locations). You are also eligible to participate if your family member with dementia has died within the past year.
