Dementia Friendly Communities: The Perspectives of People with Dementia who Live Independently
What is this Study about?
The goal of this study is to develop an in-depth understanding of the community-related needs of people with dementia who live independently, to explain and demonstrate how communities can be dementia friendly, and support social inclusion and wellbeing. This is a community-based action research study that will engage directly with people with dementia who live independently. An Action Group of people living independently with dementia will work with researchers and designers to develop an understanding of their community-related needs, explain and explore how dementia friendly communities can function effectively, and develop an action plan for sharing knowledge.
What Will Happen in This Study?
As an Action Group member, you will be asked to share your experiences and opinions about what community means to you, what makes a community dementia-friendly, and what is needed in your community to best support your needs and wellbeing.
You will work with researchers and designers during five 60-90 minute online co-design workshops on ZOOM that will happen approximately once per month. There may be the possibility to join one or more of these meetings in-person.
You may be asked to participate in a one-time 60-90 minute follow-up interview with a research team member via ZOOM, phone, or in-person.
Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?
You are eligible to participate if you:
- identify as someone living with dementia or memory impairment
- live independently in the community setting (ie: alone in your own home)
- can communicate in English
- are able and willing to participate as a member of the Action Group.
