Forgotten lives: The experiences of trans older adults with dementia
What is this Study about?
This research is guided by the following question: What are the lived experiences of older trans people living with dementia and their carers?
The objectives of the project are:
1) To develop new knowledge about how the intersections of gender identity, cognitive impairment and age are experienced in everyday life
2) To explore and document the everyday realities of the intersections of oppressions and forms of discrimination that these people experience
3) To develop recommendations for practitioners working with these populations as well as for policy makers
What Will Happen in This Study?
Participants will be asked to participate in one or two interviews with the main researchers. The researchers are cognizant of time restrictions and the ability of some folks who will need shorter interviews which could lead to multiple interviews.
Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?
To be eligible to participate in this study, you must meet the below criteria of one of the two categories:
A)
- You are over the age of 50
- You are a person living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease (moderate or advanced)
- You identify as a trans person (transsexual, transgender, non-binary, etc.)
B)
- You are over the age of 18
- You are a caregiver to a person living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease (moderate or advanced) who identifies as trans
- You provide support and assistance on a regular basis (at least monthly)
