I-Forget Research Study (Relationship of inherited genetics to intestinal microbiota)
What is this Study about?
We are researching the link between genes and microorganisms in the intestines that could impact brain health, particularly, Alzheimer's disease. Our first step is to collect data from participants to investigate this potential connection. Our goal is to uncover any relationship between inherited genetics and gut microorganisms.
We will analyze stool microorganisms and inherited DNA sequences. This data might reveal changes in gut microorganisms among individuals with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's disease. This research could help guide future clinical studies aimed at preventing cognitive decline through manipulation of the gut microbiome.
What Will Happen in This Study?
Participants will provide the samples for the pilot study ONCE. All activities are done from home. Participants will receive a collection kit and provide a cheek swab and a small stool sample. They will complete an on-line memory test and answer medical questions. Data will be de-identified.
If desired, participants will receive results of the most abundant bacteria resident in their intestines and a list of genetic variables associated with Alzheimer’s disease. These will not be interpreted, since the study is not designed to provide medically actionable information. Participants are free to share this information with their medical practitioners.
Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?
1. have a parent with Alzheimer's Disease and 2. have a live-in partner who has no family history of cognitive impairment. 3. age 50-75
