Using Translational Research to Improve Social Connection of Young Carers of People Living with Dementia
What is this Study about?
Aim: To explore and improve the social connection of young caregivers of people living with dementia (YCPLWD) in Ontario. Social connection is defined as “how people connect to each other, and it's made up of multiple distinct aspects”. In Phase 1, we will conduct focus groups with YCPLWD to explore their social connection.
Information acquired from focus groups will be used to identify and categorize the key barriers and facilitators to social connection. Additionally, this knowledge will inform Phase 2 of our project, where YCPLWD can share their ideas and insights to co-create a social connection intervention.
What Will Happen in This Study?
For Phase 1 Focus Groups: Young dementia caregivers will attend and contribute to a 1.5-2-hour focus group discussion with fellow caregivers. Individuals will be asked about their social experiences as young dementia caregivers, as well as the main barriers and facilitators to social connection. Focus groups will be offered either inperson at the University of Toronto or online. Participants will receive an appreciation of $20 to thank them for their time.
