Non-invasive brain stimulation to improve working memory in dementia: a proof-of-concept study
What is this Study about?
We are looking to evaluate the practicality and potential for efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation known as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) timed to your brain waves measured using electroencephalography (EEG) in real time. The goal of this approach is to improve the level of connection between two brain areas implicated in working memory function.
What Will Happen in This Study?
You will undergo 4 assessments: before the intervention, after the intervention, 1 month after the intervention and 4 months after the intervention. Each assessment will involve 4 working memory tasks, a cognitive questionnaire and brain wave measurements. The intervention will occur in 11 days over 2 weeks. Each intervention day you will wear an EEG cap (which is like a swim cap) and receive TMS either timed to your EEG brain waves involved in working memory or not timed to your brain waves.
Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?
You are eligible to participate if you are:
1) Diagnosed with Dementia and/or memory loss by a clinician
2) Exhibit adequate oral communication skills and cognitive function sufficient to obtain a score over 10 on the Mini-Mental State Exam
3) Over the age of 55
4) Speaks English
