Understanding Dementia Caregiver's Needs and Expectations from a Social Robotic System for Training and Support

What is this Study about?

This study aims to understand dementia caregivers' experiences, challenges, and training needs to help guide the development of a social robotic training system. The proposed system is envisioned to use role-playing scenarios based on the emotional behaviours and past identities of people living with dementia. A supporting mobile application is also being developed to work with the robot's training features. Caregivers' perspectives will help identify their needs and expectations for this social robotic training system.  

What Will Happen in This Study?

You will participate in either a focus group or one-on-one interview, conducted remotely or in person based on your preference. During the session, you will discuss your caregiving experiences, challenges, and training needs. You will then see a short presentation and demonstration of a caregiving app and discuss your impressions, followed by a short presentation about social robots and a discussion about their potential use as a caregiver training tool. At the end of the session, you will complete a short questionnaire about your demographic information, caregiving background, and familiarity with technology. The full session will take approximately 90 minutes. Participants will receive $30 CAD for completing the full session, with pro-rated remuneration if they withdraw early. 

Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?

Participants must be (1) 18 years of age or older, (2) have past, current, or recent direct experience caring for a person living with a dementia-related disorder, and (3) be able to participate in a focus group or one-on-one interview conducted in English. Both formal (professional) and informal (family) caregivers are eligible to participate.
