Reporting to the Vice President Government Advocacy, the Senior Manager Government Advocacy is someone who has established experience and meaningful political and bureaucratic connections to the federal government of Canada. This is a relationship building and stewardship role that leverages key connections and contacts to elevate the status and reputation of the Alzheimer Society of Canada as a capable and credible partner of the federal government.

This role supports all national government relations and advocacy strategies such as for National campaigns, federal elections, budgets, Minister Mandates and federal agency agendas that the leadership of ASC deems is a priority area.

This role will be central in managing policy and public affairs on issues related to Alzheimer Disease and dementia. This will include working cross-functionally with other departments, advisory boards, federation partners, subject area experts and people with lived experience to create position statements, points of view, papers, policy stances and official recommendations.

What You’ll be Doing

  • Researching, forging and nurturing relationships with federal politicians and bureaucrats who have a sincere interest in our cause; building the Society’s presence and capacity to positively and ethically influence key agendas
  • Preparing key written materials, including speech writing, statements, briefing notes, briefing meetings, PBCs, templates etc.
  • Preparing Senior Leadership staff, senior leadership volunteers, experts and People With Lived experience with pre-meeting briefings, meeting support and post meeting debriefing and follow-up
  • Bringing groups together on an important topic, fostering rich discussions, gaining consensus and moving action items forward through review and approval processes
  • As assigned by the VP Government Advocacy, participating in external committees, working groups or meetings with key stakeholders to represent ASC including monitoring and reporting back to internal staff
  • Taking responsibility for national policy and advocacy and also supporting our federation counterparts in their advocacy efforts for common provincial issues across the country; building trust and being seen as a credible partner and valuable resource
  • Arranging advocacy campaigns, “Hill days”, advocacy days/weeks; building the Society’s presence, capacity and positively and ethically influence key agendas
  • Assisting in identifying grant and sponsorship opportunities and other funding sources.
  • Taking responsibility for both fundraising and mission KPIs

Your Qualifications and Education

  • University degree in relevant area of study
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a similar role, with a combination of:
    • Policy management, government relations and stakeholder identification/management
    • Health not for profit organizations in Canada
  • Deep understanding of the federal government related to health and social service topics
  • Diplomacy skills
  • Ability to work with ambiguity
  • Strong organization, event and project management skills to be able to handle events both large and small such as national campaigns, “Hill days”, advocacy days/weeks, roundtables, advisory groups and meetings.
  • Ability to work with Ambassadors that may be researchers, clinicians, people with lived experience or staff to ensure they are prepared for meetings and events.
  • Excellent communications skills and diplomacy to coordinate consultations with internal and external partners and stakeholders. Attention to detail as well as understanding the “big picture” are important skills.
  • A strategic mindset to “connect the dots”; for instance, some issues span multiple levels of government or complex health topics. This will require agile thinking and solid judgement and leadership skills to be able to strategically plan and implement strategies.
  • Ease with building relationships and ability to positively influence both internally (cross-department collaboration, working with federation partners) and externally.
  • Strong organization and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently while also enjoying working within a team environment
  • Must be able to be registered as a lobbyist with the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada
  • Experience working in a federated model or at a national health organization is preferred
  • Experience working within the federal government within the last 5 years is preferred
  • Bilingualism is an asset
