The Hunter Family's Volunteer Story

Volunteer

For as long as I can remember we have been volunteering for something that is very close to our hearts.  In recent years after the diagnosis of both my and my husband’s father’s with dementia it has been the Alzheimer’s Society.  As with many people we didn’t know a lot about the disease until we were witnessing the struggles of our father’s and the our family members helping to take care of them.  We lived a couple of hours from our dad’s and therefore weren’t able to help with the day to day care so we decided to help any other way we could.

We were first introduced to our local Society through the company we were working for at the time.  Volunteering for local walks helped us to get involved helped to raise funds to assist those living with Alzheimer’s and support for their families.  The Pandemic made things more difficult so we hosted a live stream event with entertainment and delivered goodie bags with beverages and snacks to enjoy during the event.  Our attendees included clients, friends and family and they were all extremely generous for the cause.  We were starting to realize that almost everyone we knew had a loved one going through what our families were going through.

Last year our family was lucky enough to be able to volunteer at the first in person walk since the pandemic began.  It was heartwarming to see so many volunteers, attendees and entertainers want to be involved in this great event.
