Tipsheet for People living with Dementia

COVID-19 – March 23, 2020

The offices of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories are closed to the public and all staff are working remotely to provide support to individuals living with dementia and their care partners during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We are doing our best to stay connected with families needing support through our First Link® referral program. We also encourage you to reach out to our teams in your area by telephone or email if you have questions or are needing support. The telephone numbers are listed below. You can also find email contacts here.

Although all in-person programming is cancelled, our staff has found alternative ways to offer support groups through telephone or video conferencing. Please contact the regional office closest to you for additional information.

The ASANT Cafe is a great online resource that you can access from home. Please check out our Education programs such as the Seeds of Hope Family Learning series, Dementia Talk (our online discussion forum), or any of our archived video sessions on a variety of dementia-related topics.

Staying connected is very important. Social isolation can be very difficult for everyone, especially people living with dementia. If you are able, consider reaching out to a neighbour, friend, or relative who may be isolated. Simple actions such as a phone call, or an offer to pick up a few groceries, can make a big difference.

More information is available in Social Distancing Yes, Social Isolation No - Caring for Those Living with Dementia, Stroke and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Please continue to practice vigilant hand hygiene practices and follow all recommendations from our public health officials. Information is available on the following websites:

COVID-19 – Update March 16, 2020

The COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation is rapidly evolving here in Alberta, in Canada, and around the world. The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories is continuing to monitor the situation and will make decisions accordingly.

Our decisions are based on the recommendations and guidance provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada as well as Alberta Health and the Government of the Northwest Territories. Supporting the health and safety of our staff, clients, volunteers and partners is, and always will be, our highest priority.

The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories is open for business. What that looks like in each of the regions may vary. We encourage you to call your regional office (numbers listed below) if you have questions or need support. Our staff is able to work remotely, if needed, with minimal disruption to service.

We continue to serve families affected by dementia in Alberta and Northwest Territories through our First Link® program. First Link® provides important information, education and community connections for both people living with dementia and their care partners.

We have currently suspended all in-person support groups and programs. Our staff is looking at alternative ways to provide these by teleconference or through video conferencing. If you are registered in a program, or routinely attend a support group, you will be contacted directly.

If you are attending a one-on-one meeting with a member of our staff, we ask that you please:

  • Call ahead to confirm the meeting is still on.

  • Stay home if you are feeling unwell and reschedule your meeting.

  • Practice good hygiene including proper hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Sneeze or cough into your the crook of your elbow instead of your hand.

  • If you have travelled by plane in the last two weeks, we ask that you postpone your meeting for 14 days.

We also would like to remind you that you can access our on-line resources and education programs on the ASANT Café learning platform.

We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and will provide updates in the coming days and weeks.
