What is Café of Memories?
The Café of Memories is a community-based social event designed specifically for people living with dementia and their Care Partners. It offers:
- A calm, welcoming, and dementia‑friendly environment
- A place to socialize and build meaningful connections
- An opportunity for Care Partners to meet others on a similar journey
- A structured afternoon of entertainment, activities, and light refreshments
Each event is thoughtfully planned to ensure participants feel comfortable, supported, and engaged.
What Happens at a Café of Memories Event?
Every Café of Memories is unique, but all are designed to be “failure‑free”—meaning activities are accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful for everyone. Events may include:
- Live musical entertainment featuring familiar, nostalgic songs
- Simple painting or craft activities led by local artists
- Performances by local talent such as dance studios or school choirs
- Other creative, sensory, or social activities tailored to the community
These experiences help spark joy, encourage participation, and create moments of connection.
How Communities Can Get Involved
Communities interested in hosting a Café of Memories can partner with the Alzheimer Society to bring this program to their region. The process includes:
- Contacting the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador to express interest
- Forming a local working committee to plan and implement the event
- Selecting a suitable venue and choosing the type of activity or entertainment
- Coordinating logistics such as date, time, accessibility, and volunteer support
The Alzheimer Society provides guidance, branding standards, and promotional materials to ensure each event is delivered with consistency and care.
