What is a dementia-friendly community?

A dementia-friendly community is a place where people living with dementia, their families, and care partners feel included and supported. While creating dementia-friendly communities, individuals and organizations should focus on both the physical and social environments to ensure they are fully accessible.

Why it is important

Dementia affects thousands of individuals and families across Newfoundland and Labrador. Becoming dementia-friendly means creating communities, businesses, and services that are inclusive, supportive, and accessible to those living with dementia.

A dementia-friendly approach helps individuals living with dementia maintain dignity, independence, and quality of life for as long as possible. It also reduces stigma, improves communication, and fosters a sense of belonging. Whether you're a business owner, health care provider, or community member, small changes—such as patience, clear communication, and creating supportive environments can make a big difference.

How We Support Dementia-Friendly Communities

The Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to creating inclusive, supportive environments where people living with dementia can continue to participate in their communities with dignity and confidence. Through education, training, and support, we work with businesses, organizations, first responders, and community groups to foster dementia-friendly communities.

By increasing awareness and providing education, we empower communities to make simple yet meaningful changes that improve accessibility, communication, and overall quality of life for those impacted by dementia.

Together, we can build dementia-friendly communities, we can ensure that people living with dementia feel safe, respected, and valued.
