Donna's Volunteer Story

“ It is definitely Alzheimer’s” and with those 4 words, my world turned upside down. My beautiful, loving, independent mother was officially diagnosed with this dreaded disease that would take us on a difficult 10 year journey. And would ultimately lead me to becoming a Volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society. They provided the knowledge, tools and assistance I needed to extend our time together while giving my mom a good quality of life.  The Alzheimer’s music program, loaded an IPod with all of the popular songs from her era. One of my most cherished memories was me and my mom singing to her favourite Anne Murray tunes. She had trouble remembering my name and didn’t know where she was, but we could still connect through music.

My first summer living in Barrie, I saw a poster for the 2016 Simcoe County Walk on the lakeshore and immediately signed up. I met a lot of enthusiastic participants and dedicated ASSC staff, so I decided to be a “full-time” volunteer in my mother’s memory. As a recently retired TV Producer of 30+ years, I was looking for a creative outlet in the local community. Joining the organizing committee for this annual event proved to be the answer.

Every year since then, the Walk has been growing and evolving more successfully.  Last year’s single day celebration at Simcoe County Museum with a stage, MC, technical setup and performers, was a huge undertaking but an incredible experience!  Coordinating the entertainment, which included the County Chordsmen, Little Big Band, Princess Belle, Zola Hoops, Ivy Stilts, Salsa Beats,  reminded me of my days at CBC working on a variety show.

My experience as a volunteer has become more fulfilling, challenging and most importantly, a lot of fun!!  ASSC is always in need of more volunteers. You don’t have to have any special talents, education or training. Just show up with your enthusiasm and a positive attitude. The staff and volunteers work together as a team to make it all happen. At the end of the day you will have a great feeling of personal accomplishment and pride knowing you’ve played a role in supporting such an important cause.
