Barrie proclamation

The City of Barrie has proclaimed that January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month.
Proclamations are ceremonial documents issued and signed by the Mayor to recognize the value and importance of a person, an event, a campaign, or an organization for a certain day, week or month. Acknowledgement is normally given to reward the efforts and commitment of individuals and organizations that enhance our community and are significant to Barrie residents.
The Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County thanks the City of Barrie for its support. More than 11,500 individuals in Simcoe County are living with dementia, and it impacts not only their loved ones, but those advocating for change to make Barrie a Dementia-Friendly Community.
The proclamation, signed Jan. 23, 2025, reads:
WHEREAS; Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias affect over 500,000 Canadians, including an increasing number under the age of 65, and this number is expected to surpass 1 million within a generation if action is not taken; and
WHEREAS; Women are disproportionately affected, and these illnesses place a significant emotional and economic burden on families and caregivers; and
WHEREAS; The Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County provides essential support, education, and advocacy for those living with dementia, their caregivers, and families, fostering a more compassionate community; and
WHEREAS; There is currently no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease, making it vital to raise awareness, promote brain health, and advocate for the resources needed to address this growing public health challenge;
THEREFORE, I, Alex Nuttall, Mayor of the City of Barrie, do hereby proclaim January 2025 as “National Alzheimer Awareness Month” in the City of Barrie.
