Communication Tips for Care Partners

It is much better to validate and respond with empathy than to tell the person living with dementia that they are wrong.

The following are a couple of scripts that may help you: (remember when you use this style of response, to make them your own and personalize them for the person you are caring for).

  • “Can you tell me what is wrong, Why is my brain not working right” - “This must be frustration for you.  How can I help?
  • “Where is my Mom?”- “You are missing your Mom.  Do you need something from her?” “Tell me about your Mom; did she like to…?”
  • “Where is my Dad?”  - “Do you need your Dad to fix something?”
  • “I want to go home!”- “Do you need something at home, or do you want to go there?”
  • “I want to visit my sister now!” - “Yes, that is a great idea!, I look forward to our visit with (say her name) on Saturday.  She said she was going to bring… for you.”
