National Forum on Alert Systems

In partnership with AGE-WELL NCE, the Alzheimer Society of Ontario, Dementia Advocacy Canada, the Calgary Coordinated Response to Missing Seniors, the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia, and several persons living with dementia, Dr. Lili Liu of the University of Waterloo is hosting an online National Forum to discuss community alert systems for vulnerable Canadians at risk of going missing.

Date: Thursday November 26, 2020 at 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM ET

Location: Zoom videoconferencing (login details to be shared one day before the event)

This 3-hour forum will bring together persons with lived experience, first responders, community organizations, policy makers, and researchers.

Thought Leaders will present their perspectives on the topic and address the following research questions:

• What are the factors to consider (e.g., challenges and opportunities) before we develop alert system(s) for vulnerable adults at risk of going missing?

• What is the feasibility of developing alert systems locally, provincially or nationally?

• What steps would need to be taken to develop alert systems? Who needs to be involved?

The Thought Leaders will also address questions posed by the public participants and other Thought Leaders.

To preserve anonymity, the audience will be muted and the webcams will be disabled. The audience will be able to interact with Thought Leaders using the Zoom Question & Answer feature and are encouraged not to identify themselves by name. The proceedings, including information shared by the audience will be recorded and transcribed. However, the recording will not be made public and access to the recording will be limited to members of the research team. The information from the forum will be analyzed and developed into a public document (or policy brief) that will be shared with policy decision makers and may be used to inform policy on missing vulnerable adults. In all reports, your identity will be confidential. As the information is collected without identifiers, it is not possible to withdraw your contributions after the forum. The National Forum is also hosted for research purposes; therefore, the proceedings may be presented as research at a scientific conference or submitted to a scientific journal. The research part of this event has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Committee.
