The Alzheimer Society of Huron County provides information, education and support through individual counselling and support groups that provide a safe place to share information, thoughts, feelings and experiences.

Individual support

Individualized supportive counseling is available for:

  • People living with a cognitive impairment due to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia or an undiagnosed memory problem.
  • Care partners of people living with MCI, Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia or an undiagnosed memory problem.
  • Family of someone living with dementia.
  • Friends of someone living with dementia.

Counselling is confidential and is offered by telephone, email or in person at the Alzheimer Society office in Clinton, our satellite locations in Wingham or Zurich or in the comfort of your own home.

Caregiver support

These support groups meet monthly, providing a safe place for family caregivers of people living with any form of dementia to share concerns and experiences and learn from others.

Each session offers information and support to family members and provides opportunities for questions about their caregiving roles.

Skilled facilitation ensures confidentiality and provides an educational component to increase the participants' confidence in their ability to care for their loved one.

The following list includes the caregiver support group schedules of the Alzheimer Society of Huron County.

Clinton support group

Date: The third Wednesday of every month.

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Exeter support group

Date: The second Thursday of every month.

Time: 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Goderich support group

Date: The second Monday of every month.

Time: 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Grand Bend support group

Date: The first Monday of every month.

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Location: Grand Bend Area Community Health Centre, 69 Main Street East, Grand Bend, ON N0M 1T0

Wingham support group

Date: The first Wednesday of every month.

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Location: Maitland River Community Church, 414 Josephine Street, Wingham, ON N0G 2W0

Early stage support

We offer Circle of Friends, a support group for people in the early stages of dementia, in two locations in Huron County.

This group is for persons diagnosed with early stage memory problems. The group provides an opportunity to meet with others in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease and share ideas about living with memory loss, learn about a variety of topics (Advanced care planning, disability pensions, supports available and more).

Counselling and supportive listening

Staff of the Alzheimer Society are available to answer questions, provide information and support other services in the community related to dementia care.

A Family Support Counsellor (social worker) provides supportive counselling to individuals and their family caregivers across Huron County affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, using a client centered approach.

The Family Support Counsellor can link clients with appropriate community agencies and resources based on their needs and requests. This service is delivered in office, by telephone, email, and home visits, utilizing both individual and group approaches.

Individual Care Plan consultations

Society staff are available to assist long-term care homes and community service providers with developing care plans for individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.
