Advocate

The Alzheimer Society of PEI gives a voice to all Islanders affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias at all levels of government. We work with politicians, policymakers and other community and health-care organizations to raise awareness about the issues and concerns that matter most to them.

Support from our governments is essential to meet the needs of everyone touched by this devastating illness. The Alzheimer Society of PEI is committed to advocating for legislation, policies and programs that are responsive to the needs of people with dementia, their families and caregivers.

But we can’t do it alone. By working together, we can offer the best care for today and the best hope for a world without Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The Alzheimer Society is delighted that the Government of Canada committed to developing a national dementia strategy in June 2017. This is vital to the future of Canada’s health-care system. The costs of dementia are skyrocketing. By 2040, the cost to Canadians will be an incredible $293 billion per year.

Provincially, the Alzheimer Society of PEI and Health PEI is rolling out an awareness campaign #LetsTalkMemory. There are currently 2,570 Islanders living with dementia and this number will more than double by 2031.
