Alzheimer's Awareness Month

January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Canada. Learn what that means and how you can get involved.

January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Every January, Alzheimer’s Awareness Month unites communities across Canada to increase understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. This year, our campaign is focusing on raising awareness about brain health and actionable steps that people can take to reduce their risk of developing dementia.

Reducing Your Dementia Risk

The number of people living with dementia is growing. By 2050, over 1.7 million Canadians, including nearly 22,000 New Brunswickers, will be living with dementia.

But there is hope. Evidence shows that lifestyle changes at any age can help reduce the risk of dementia. By reducing our risk and delaying the onset of progression, we could see thousands fewer cases of dementia, ease the demand on caregivers, and significantly reduce caregiving hours.

This campaign highlights evidence-based actions individuals can take to lower their risk while acknowledging the unique challenges people may face in making those changes. Together, we can empower individuals and communities to support brain health.

Light It Up in Blue

From January 6–10, we’re encouraging individuals, businesses, and organizations to shine a light on dementia by displaying blue lights. This initiative symbolizes hope and solidarity with people affected by dementia.

Taking Care of Your Brain Webinar

On January 15 and 16, we’re hosting a free webinar on the importance of brain health. You’ll learn about dementia, key risk factors, and practical steps you can take to reduce your risk. We’ll also explore how communities can work together to make brain health more accessible for everyone.
