A dementia diagnosis affects more than one person—it impacts entire families. On World Alzheimer’s Month, we recognize the individuals living with dementia, caregivers, and families who navigate this journey every day.

For 40 years, the Alzheimer Society of York Region (AS York) has been a source of support, connection, and guidance for families in our community. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we are reminded that dementia care is not a single moment—it is an ongoing journey that requires ongoing support.

A Family’s Story of 40 Years of Care

Nearly 40 years ago, Elizabeth de Faria’s family first turned to AS York when her grandmother, Ivy, was living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Over the years, her family’s journey continued. AS York was there when her father, Tony, needed support, and today Elizabeth has returned once again as her mother, Frances, lives with dementia.

Through each chapter, AS York has provided her family with education, programs, resources, and the reassurance that they were not alone.

“Who could have imagined that my family would be relying on the Alzheimer Society 40 years after we first walked through the doors? I’m grateful for the donors who help ensure families like mine are surrounded by support at every stage of the journey.”
— Elizabeth de Faria

Join The Giving Circle

To mark our 40th anniversary, AS York is introducing The Giving Circle —a community of monthly donors helping ensure families continue to have access to the support they need.

Monthly giving creates consistency for families as their needs change over time. A monthly gift of $40 in honour of our 40th anniversary helps sustain caregiver support, education programs, counselling, and services for families today and into the future.

Together, we can ensure no family faces dementia alone.
