Every Gift Counts: Celebrating Philanthropy in Action
November 15 marks National Philanthropy Day—a time to honour the generosity, compassion, and commitment of those who give.
November 15 marks National Philanthropy Day—a time to honour the generosity, compassion, and commitment of those who give. At the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, we are deeply grateful for the donors, volunteers, and community champions who make our work possible. Your support ensures that individuals and families facing dementia can access vital programs and services—free of charge.
This year, we are proud to recognize three remarkable groups at the Association of Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day Luncheon, presented by the Edmonton Community Foundation. Their stories are a testament to the power of giving and the enduring impact of community.
Love Endures
When Jack Tabor and Kit Yates reflect on their journeys with their wives, Donna and Teddy, who lived with dementia, one truth stands out: love never fades. Inspired by the care their families received, Jack and Kit chose to give back—so that future families would never walk this path alone.
Together with Kennedy Reitsma, Recreation Coordinator at Devonshire Village, they organized the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s - Walk in a Box, in 2024 and 2025, rallying residents and families to raise awareness and funds. Kennedy, an aspiring psychologist and passionate mental health advocate, also leads dementia education sessions in the community.
Their efforts are more than events—they are acts of remembrance, resilience, and hope.
“We give back because we have seen how love endures, even when memory fades. Raising funds for Alzheimer's research and support services is a way to honour the strength of the families affected by this disease and help carry forward the legacy of the people we love. Giving back is a promise that their stories—and so many others—won’t be forgotten.” – Jack, Kit & Kennedy
Turning Horsepower into Heart
What began as a car club has become a movement of compassion. Since 1996, the Dropsicles Meltdown has brought together car enthusiasts with a shared mission: to make a difference.
In 2017, through the Anything for Alzheimer’s fundraising initiative, they chose to support the Alzheimer Society—a cause close to their hearts. Many members have loved ones affected by dementia, and their annual car show has since raised over $30,000 for our programs. But their impact goes beyond dollars. They’ve helped reduce stigma, raise awareness, and build a community of care.
“We wanted our club to do more than share a love of cars—we wanted to make a difference. Supporting the Alzheimer Society felt deeply personal and profoundly meaningful.” - Dropsicles
Strengthening Communities
For more than a decade, Ledcor has stood beside us as a steadfast partner in the fight against dementia. Through the Alzheimer’s Pro-Am Hockey Tournament, they’ve raised over $1 million, directly supporting thousands of Albertans.
Their commitment extends beyond the rink. As part of the Ledcor Cares initiative, the company and its employees have invested over $20 million in more than 300 charities across North America. Their belief in building strong, compassionate communities is woven into everything they do.
“Helping those in need strengthens the communities where we live and work. We are proud of our longstanding relationship with the Alzheimer Society and grateful for the opportunity to support those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with CARE: Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empathy.” - Ledcor
