Charitable Donation Receipting Policy
At the Alzheimer Society of York Region (the “Society”), we are committed to transparency, legal compliance, and ethical stewardship of all charitable contributions. As a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), we issue official donation receipts for eligible gifts in accordance with the Income Tax Act (Canada) and CRA guidelines.
We deeply value the generosity of our donors and want you to understand how receipting works, what types of donations are eligible, and how we protect your trust.
What Is an Official Donation Receipt?
An official donation receipt is a tax document that enables you to claim a non-refundable tax credit on your Canadian income tax return. To be eligible for an official charitable tax receipt, your contribution must meet CRA's definition of a “gift”—a voluntary transfer of property (such as cash, securities, or goods) made without expectation of return or personal benefit.
Unless otherwise requested, a donor will receipt their receipt by email.
Eligible Donations
We issue official donation receipts for:
- Cash, credit card, or cheque donations of $20 or more
- Gifts of publicly traded securities
- Bequests and other planned gifts
- The charity may accept gifts-in-kind (non-cash donations) provided they are aligned with the organization’s mission and meet Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements for charitable receipting. The charity reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to accept or decline any in-kind donation.
We can also issue receipts upon request for donations under $20.
Ineligible Donations
Under CRA rules, we cannot issue receipts for:
- Donations of time, services, or labour
- Raffle tickets, auction purchases, or event fees
- Sponsorships or advertising payments
- Gifts directed to specific individuals
- Contributions with significant personal benefits
If you are unsure whether your gift qualifies for a receipt, please reach out—we’re happy to clarify.
Information Required to be Eligible for a Tax Receipt of a cash gift
- donor first name middle initial and your last name
- donor full address
- the amount of the gift
- gift date
- credit card
When Will I Receive My Receipt?
We aim to issue receipts promptly. One-time donations are typically receipted within 30 days of processing. For recurring donations, we will issue an annual consolidated receipt by February 28 of the following year.
Gifts-in-Kind and Valuation
For non-cash gifts, we may require an independent, professional appraisal to determine the fair market value. An official donation receipt will be issued for the eligible amount once this value is confirmed in accordance with CRA guidelines.
Split Receipting (When You Receive a Benefit)
If you receive a benefit from your donation—like a meal, a gift, or event access, we will calculate the eligible portion of your gift after subtracting the value of the benefit (as required by CRA). A receipt will be issued for that remaining amount only.
Lost or Duplicate Receipts
If you lose your receipt or notice an error, please contact us. We will re-issue a receipt marked “Duplicate”.
For audit reasons, all corrections must follow CRA protocols.
Protecting Your Information
We take the security and confidentiality of your donor information seriously. Donation and receipt records are kept securely and are not shared or sold. All data is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
