An Open Letter to Alberta Politicians

Alberta and Northwest Territories

ABVOTE2023

Your provincial government impacts you every day. They’re responsible for so many things that impact individuals living with dementia, like healthcare and continuing care, social services and benefits, housing, workplace legislation, support for community organizations and more. Their role is to listen to the concerns of people living in their communities, provide services based on the needs of the community and implement changes through new or amended policies.

There will be a provincial election in Alberta on May 29, 2023. As you get ready to cast your vote, take some time to think about how you can use this opportunity to advocate for issues affecting people living with dementia, their care partners and their families.

How can you make dementia a priority for your provincial government?

Provincial governments play a crucial role in setting policy that impacts daily life for those living with dementia, their care partners, and others impacted by dementia.

Candidates who knock on your door want to hear from you. Raise awareness of the importance of asking candidates how they intend to support both seniors and people on the dementia journey, their family members and care partners. Consult the Elections Alberta website for detailed information about the election, including voting locations, the candidates in your area and how to connect with candidates to learn more about their platform.

As the provincial election approaches on May 29th, there has never been a better time to raise our voices and bring attention to dementia and the thousands of Albertans affected.

On behalf of all individuals affected by dementia across the province, Dr. George Andrews, President and CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, wrote an open letter to the Alberta NDP and UCP parties, outlining priorities for dementia care and support. You can read and share our letter here. You will find the official responses we've received below so you can stay informed as we approach the election.

You too can advocate and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Access our Election Toolkit to learn more about how you can connect with candidates and others in our community.

Join us in advocating and raising awareness about dementia!
