Volunteer Stories

Read about our volunteers and their personal experiences volunteering with the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County.

Her name was Myrtle. She was my mother-in-law. In 2010, she lost her battle due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She is the reason I became a volunteer, and she is the reason I still volunteer, twelve years on. I first signed on as a Tag Days volunteer then, wanting to use my decades of Toastmasters skills, became involved in the Speaker’s Bureau. I’ve spoken to audiences large and small, sharing the messaging about Dementia, Brain Health, reducing stigma and helping raise awareness for Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County (ASSC) and the incredible work they do in the community. I’m privileged – and really excited! - to be working with the dedicated ASSC staff as lead volunteer for the renewed Speaker’s Bureau, launching this Fall. Volunteering is an integral part of me, as it helps me use skills and develop new ones. It’s reciprocal, as I receive so much joy in my role.

Consider using your skills, your voice and your time for ASSC.
