Join us on Tuesday, February 27, for our next online AlzEducate session! We’ll be joined by Dr. Maia Von Maltzhan, and RNs Janet Wright and Kate Newton to learn about the Geriatric Medicine Outpatient clinic and the services they provide. They will discuss receiving a diagnosis of dementia and the support services that are offered. They are a multidisciplinary team who assess the overall frailty and memory of our senior population.

Speakers:

Dr. Maia von Maltzahn

Dr. Maia von Maltzahn is a Geriatrician with the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Dalhousie University. She serves at the physician service lead for Geriatric Medicine Outpatient Services. She is also passionate about medical education and is the Program Director for the Geriatric Medicine Resident training program at Dalhousie. Her goal as an educator is to inspire trainees in discovering the joy and privilege of caring for older adults.

Janet Wright, RN/BscN

Janet graduated from the Bathurst School of Nursing in 1992. She then worked as a registered nurse in her home town of Campbellton, NB. She went on to pursue her Nursing Degree from Dalhousie University graduating in 1998. She is a nationally certified Geriatric Nurse in Canada.

Janet has been working 32 years in nursing and has always focused her career on caring for seniors. She has experience in working in acute care/rehabilitation/travel nursing and has worked in a remote fishing village nursing home. She has been with NS Health for 22 years. Currently, she is the interim charge nurse for the Geriatric Medicine Outpatient clinic. She likes to travel, read and spend time with her husband and fur baby kitty Oliver.

Kate Newton, RN

Kate has been working with the QEII’s Department of Geriatrics since 2013, including six years working as a staff nurse on the Geriatric Assessment Unit. For the past six years, she has been working both as a clinic nurse at the VMB Geriatric Clinic and as a Geriatric Outreach nurse on the Outreach team. Kate’s past nursing experience also includes time working on surgical units at the QEII. Kate lives in Halifax with her husband and their three boys.
