Being mindful of what we eat is not just important for our whole bodies, but also for our brains.

To help us stay mindful, we worked with our friend Chef Liz to put together a digital recipe book called Mindful Eating: Dementia-Friendly Recipes. In it, Chef Liz shares her story, and why mindful eating is so important for everyone, especially those living with dementia.

Currently a private chef in Toronto and a graduate of the Natural Gourmet Cooking School for Health and Culinary Arts, Chef Liz always wanted to be a chef. As a little kid, she watched cooking shows and was mesmerized by all the activities going on in the kitchen. “Watching people cook always seemed magical to me. I just loved the way ingredients were combined to make beautiful and delicious meals,” Liz shares.

Sadly, when Liz was a teenager, her father passed away due to brain cancer. “There was a similarity in his cognitive decline to those affected with dementia,” Liz explains. “As there are no known cures for Alzheimer's disease or other dementias right now, the best defence is offence.” Cognitive decline can appear in individuals as early as their 20s, so it is very important that people are made aware that their lifestyle can play a huge role in how the future of one’s cognitive health is going to unfold.

To help us stay mindful, Chef Liz worked with the Alzheimer Society to put together a digital recipe book called Mindful Eating: Dementia-Friendly Recipes. In it, Chef Liz shares her story, and why mindful eating is so important for everyone, especially those living with dementia.

“Everything in the body is connected. What is good for the heart is good for the brain. More and more studies are coming out all the time with results showing that certain foods can make an impact on preventing or delaying cognitive decline,” Liz shares.
