NVW2021: Stepping up in the business community through Breakfast to Remember

B2R-NVW

This National Volunteer Week, we are showcasing some of the integral roles volunteers play in our organization. From April 18 – 24, 2021, follow @AlzheimerBC on social media to learn more about these roles and help us recognize our incredible volunteers.

Breakfast to Remember committees in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna build dementia awareness and support by engaging their local business communities to help ensure the success of the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s signature event. Traditionally, the breakfasts, held in February and March, are a great way for the business community to come together to hear inspiring speakers and network while raising critical funds. In 2021, the committees pivoted to produce a single provincial-wide virtual event that featured Col. Chris Hadfield as the keynote speaker.

“Having a personal connection with dementia, I wanted to bring awareness to the disease and highlight all the help and support the Alzheimer Society of B.C. provides in the Okanagan,” says Tracey Green, Chair of the Kelowna Breakfast to Remember committee. “When I accepted the role as chair in 2021, I did not anticipate that we would still be in full pandemic mode and planning for the event this year was an interesting adventure! I have enjoyed the passion and engagement of our committee members and our dedicated Society leaders in putting this event together. I am hopeful that 2022 allows us to gather in person once again.”

Each year committee members support Breakfast to Remember by leveraging their networks to secure sponsorship, matching gifts, donations and table sales in support of the fundraising goals. Additionally, the committees provide input and suggestions for keynote and other speakers, as well as program development as required.
