Veteran participant Delia Visscher will be participating in the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5k Charity Challenge again in 2021. At 90 years of age, Delia is a true example of energy, resilience and generosity who has raised more than $37,580 for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. since she first began participating in the challenge back in 2013. It was following her husband Jans’ dementia diagnosis and transition into long-term care that Delia first started running to raise funds to support people living with dementia.

Delia says, “The Alzheimer Society of B.C. was my basic education source over the years that I was the caregiver for my husband. Their printed material as well as their support groups and shared research results have all inspired me and my friends to continue to donate to our favourite and favoured charity. This year, with the pandemic continuing to change our lives, has brought our community of donors together in an unexpected way – many of my usual supporters have doubled their donations, thus showing their appreciation and understanding of the needs of such organizations as the Alzheimer Society of B.C. My heartfelt appreciation goes to all involved in the fine work of the Society.”

The funds raised at the Scotiabank Vancouver Half-Marathon & 5k will help provide programs and services for the estimated 70,000 British Columbians living with dementia and their families. The funds raised will also help our advocacy efforts and research into the disease and people living with it.

To help Delia reach her goal of raising over $40,000 through this event, or to support other team members, go to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Charity Challenge page here.
