In late 2020, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. began a pilot project to offer an online version of Minds in Motion®, a social and fitness program for people living with early-stage dementia and a care partner. The feedback has been very positive and we’re happy to announce that new sessions will continue to open up throughout the spring. New participants are welcome to register.

The benefits of Minds in Motion®are tangible for both people living with dementia, and their care partners who also take part. When Terry Waines, who supports her husband Bob, joined an in-person session in Victoria in 2018, it allowed her to have fun and get some exercise, but also to be around people who understood and accepted her and her husband.

“It can take longer to get to know one another, but we’re starting to make connections with the people who are travelling along the dementia journey with us,” Terry says. “I think it can be a lonely journey if you’re isolating yourself. You really struggle in this and unless you feel like you’re struggling along with someone else, it can be quite lonely.”

Sandee Hall

Sandee Hall, who lives with young onset dementia, participated in Minds in Motion® in Kamloops before the pandemic began. The program allowed her to make close friends with people who were going through the same experience. For Sandee, the online format was easy to navigate and still came with good music, exercise and the important social aspect.

“I really look forward to Minds in Motion®,” Sandee says. “It’s always on my calendar. The other participants are a huge part of my social life, as I can connect with them on a different level. They are like family to me.”
